So called "Freedom Summers" were organized, where town halls, sit-ins, voter registrations drives, and similar activities were organized. As a response to this, the white residents of Fayette and Sumner County (TN) organized a blacklist of African American residents who participated in these events. Those on the list were not allowed to get much needed loans from banks to finance their farmwork. This eventually forced them off their land, and many took up residence in the "Freedom Village" tent city on farmer Shepard Towles' land. After Dr. King’s assassination, National Guard troops were deployed into Memphis to quell protests and enforce a curfew. This haunting image depicts soldiers standing on the corner of Hernando and Beale Streets, where Dr. King had just led a protest weeks before.

The 1968 Memphis Sanitation Workers strike and near daily protests reached the ears of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, and he came to lead a massive protest. Vastly larger than previous protests, this one quickly broke out into disarray, leading Dr. King and his team to evacuate to safety. This photo captures the remains of that chaotic march on Beale St.
In 1968, Memphis sanitation workers went on strike, demanding fair pay and dignity. Among them stood Cornelia Crenshaw — the only woman on the strike’s leadership team. A fierce advocate for unions, she risked her job and reputation to fight for justice, being fired from the Memphis Housing Authority after a 27 year tenure.

Though he never lived to see the march from Marks, MS (the poorest county in the nation) to the Mall of Washington DC, his team carried it to completion. The covered wagons they used symbolized the plight of the disenfranchised poor.

Ernest Withers was scheduled to photograph Debra Nell Brittenum’s first communion at St. Augustine Catholic Church, but he missed it. He arrived at the family’s home later that evening and asked her to re-dress and recreate the post. Decades later, Debra was quoted as saying, ‘I’m clearly asleep in the photograph, and I certainly was never an angel.

Martin Stadium, home of the Memphis Red Sox, was one of the few Black-owned ballparks in America. Sunday games were the most popular, and they were celebrations of excellence and community pride, which is why attendees wore their Sunday best.. For many, the Red Sox symbolized what Black achievement looked like when given the chance to shine.
Inside the Williams repair shop on Union Avenue in Memphis, work and community came together. Ernest Withers often photographed everyday Black businesses like this one — capturing the pride of ownership and craftsmanship that built Memphis’ Black economy during segregation.
In 1960, five Black Memphians boarded a whites-only bus — and were arrested for disorderly conduct. They made no speeches and carried no signs, yet their quiet act of defiance led to the integration of Memphis’ bus system two months later–an example of how true change often begins in silence.

Julie Ann Briscoe’s sign said it all: ‘If we can fight for democracy abroad, we can demand equality at home’, alluding to the fact that in the 50s the US army had integrated and fought the Korean War, yet lunch counters were still not integrated.

In 1968, union leader T.O. Jones organized Memphis sanitation workers into a strike demanding better pay and safer working conditions. After the city refused their requests, the workers began near-daily protests as trash piled up across Memphis for more than a month. By March, their pleas reached Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who traveled to Memphis to lead a massive demonstration. Far larger than previous marches, this one quickly dissolved into chaos. Fearing for his safety and that of his aides, Dr. King was escorted away, though he vowed to return and lead a truly peaceful march. Tragically, when he came back to Memphis in early April to fulfill that promise, he was assassinated before he could lead the march. Here we see Dr. King being evacuated from the chaotic demonstration.
On April 8, 1968, four days after Dr. King’s assassination, thousands filled the streets of Memphis carrying signs that read, ‘Honor King: End Racism.’ Their grief became a movement — a living memorial that carried his mission forward, one step at a time.
