The Story Behind the Legacy

In 1935, The Cotton Makers Jubilee was birthed out of Black people's exclusion from publicly participating in the city's all-white Cotton Carnival. Founded by Dr. R.Q. Venson, the event celebrated African American culture, business, and achievement. This image of the parade highlights how Black Memphians created their own institutions to honor success and community pride.
